धम्मपद- यमकवग्गो ( The Dhaamapada -Chapter One -- The Pairs)

Chapter One -- The Pairs-verses 3-4

३.

"He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered me, he robbed me"--those who harbour such thoughts do not still their hatred.

४.

"He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered
me, he robbed me"--those who do not harbour
such thoughts still their hatred.

  1. I could never really understand this verse of dhammapada..It did not make sense to me that such thoughts would not arise if some one hurt me. It is natural to get these thoughts if you are on the recieving end. I think the key is to understand who is it that is being victimized? Does it exist?

Yes Taru , this is natural , but the beauty is to restrain . Patience is not a sign of weakness or defeatism but it's the unfailing strength of men & women. The secret of patience is to change the mental picture or you intrept the situation . It's just like Jesus advicing his followers to turn the left cheek if someone slaps you on your right cheek . In Treasury of Truth Ven Warrogada explains on verses 3-4 , " Emotion is an excitment of the body that begins with thought .A thought creates a mental picture if it helds excites a corresponding emotions . It is only when this mental picture is discarded & paid no attention then the emotion subsides."
